Happy Birthday to Opry vocalist Carol Lee Cooper. The Carol Lee Singers provided vocal backup for almost all the Grand Ole Opry acts beginning in the 1960s. Often without sheet music to work from and no time for a rehearsal, she devised a special system of hand signals for conducting the singers. On February 7, 1921, Wilma Lee Leary was born in Valley Head, West Virginia. Along with husband Stoney Cooper, she became a Grand Ole Opry member, and they scored four Top 10 hits from 1958-1961. Wilma Lee Cooper passed away September 13, 2011 at age 90. The Cooper's daughter, Carol Lee, went on to form a vocal group, backing up almost all the Grand Ole Opry acts from 1972 to 2012. | GatorRock

Though she has passed, the legacy of The First Lady of Bluegrass lives on. The Grand Ole Opry member began as a gospel singer in her family's group, "The Leary Family." Despite a struggling traditional Country Music genre in its time, Wilma Lee and her husband Stoney managed to reach the top ten four times.
