On the road, alongside the Western Wall, are piles of stones thrown from the Temple during its destruction in 70 CE. The beautiful view you see is the result of extensive excavations along the southern and western walls of the Temple Mount, which had been surrounded by mounds of dirt visible in pre-excavation photos taken in the early 1900’s.
