US withdrawing 700 Marines from Los Angeles: Pentagon
The 700 US Marines in Los Angeles are being withdrawn, ending a contentious deployment of the troops in the city, the Pentagon announced on Monday.Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also announced the withdrawal of the Marines in a post on X,
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Seven hundred Marines sent to Los Angeles will leave the city, the Pentagon said Monday. The Marines were sent to the city in June alongside 4,000 National Guard soldiers in response to protests over the Trump administration’s ongoing immigration raids around the city.
The troops were first moved into the city in June after destructive protests in the downtown area, but Mayor Bass says the federal forces were not needed then, and are less necessary now.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass on Sunday called for an end to what she described as a “reign of terror” in the city, referring to the ongoing masked ICE raids and military presence in the city under the Trump administration.
