The Palestine Liberation Organization has announced the creation of a vice presidency under 89-year-old leader Mahmoud Abbas, who has not specified a successor.

Senior Palestinian officials loyal to President Mahmoud Abbas are meeting to vote on the creation of a vice presidency and could choose a possible successor to the unpopular 89-year-old.

The expectation is that whoever holds the role would be the frontrunner to succeed President Mahmoud Abbas, 89.
