Though DJ LeMahieu was one of the quietest players in the Yankees' clubhouse — in public, with the media and, to a lesser degree, with his teammates — no one commanded more respect among his peers.

One day after Aaron Boone declared DJ LeMahieu “a bat off the bench” and physically challenged by the third base position, the Yankees designated the two-time batting champ for assignment. The team announced the decision on Wednesday. The Yankees still owe LeMahieu, 36, about $22 million.

Aaron Boone announced that LeMahieu is no longer viewed as an everyday player. The veteran was not pleased about the change.

It does not sound as if anything is necessarily imminent in terms of Jazz Chisholm Jr. moving back to second base and DJ LeMahieu shifting to third.

The club will owe LeMahieu about $22 million, which includes the rest of his $15 million salary this season, along with $15 million in 2026.

The Yankees aren’t moving Jazz Chisholm back to second base just for one night. Aaron Boone revealed to “Talkin’ Yanks” on Tuesday that the 2025 All-Star, who had been playing third base since he returned from an oblique injury last month, will be the team’s second baseman moving forward.

LeMahieu, who turns 37 on Sunday, was designated for assignment and fellow infielder Jorbit Vivas was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
