The Boston Red Sox surprised the baseball world this past offseason. Boston had spent years avoiding large contracts. The Red Sox said early in the offseason that things were going to be different and they absolutely were.

According to McCaffrey, Boston's contract offer to Soto was 15 years and $700 million. She added that the Red Sox's offer far exceeded the largest contract in franchise history, the 10-year, $313.5 million deal designated hitter Rafael Devers signed in 2023.
The Red Sox, too, were suitors for Soto last December, even if the pursuit of the free agent outfielder was portrayed elsewhere as an exclusively New York contest.
Instead of accepting Detroit’s more traditional long-term offer this past offseason, Bregman went for Boston’s short-term, high value, opt-out laden deal. That’s paid off mightily so far.
