British heavyweight champion Fabio Wardley is set to fight for the WBA regular title against veteran champion Kubrat Pulev.
The current king at heavyweight is unified ruler Oleksandr Usyk, who won back-to-back fights against Tyson Fury to establish himself as the clear number one in the division. Their first meeting last May saw Usyk become undisputed, though he had to relinquish the IBF belt in order to fulfil the rematch with Fury in December.
The controversy from Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach Jr’s draw in Brooklyn continues to unfold. ‘Tank’ Davis kept hold of his WBA Lightweight World Title with the scores of 115-113 in his favour and two cards of 114-114. Crucially, however, the champion took a knee in the ninth round which was not called a knockdown by referee Steve Willis.
The key moment happened in round nine when, having been hit by a punch from Roach, Davis then waited a moment before taking a knee. He then rushed to his corner and asked for his face to be wiped, later saying that “grease” from his hair was “burning” his eyes.
The winner of Pulev-Wardley – or Pulev in the event of a draw – must then face No. 3 contender Michael Hunter within 120 days.
