President Donald Trump's administration has given New York City a deadline of March 21 to end the congestion pricing program begun last month, a policy that was intended to reduce traffic in Manhattan's central business district and raise money to upgrade aging subway and bus systems.

Court filings revealed that President Trump is seeking to end the New York toll program within weeks. Legal experts say the deadline is not enforceable.

New York City collected $48.6 million in revenue from the first month of its congestion pricing program that the Trump administration has moved to kill, a transit agency said.

The transportation secretary said he would revoke federal approval for the program, citing the cost to motorists; the Metropolitan Transportation Authority quickly filed a lawsuit to stop the move.

The Trump administration has instructed New York City to end congestion pricing by March 21. The Federal Highway Administration sent a letter to New York State DOT, New York City DOT and MTA, saying the MTA must stop collecting tolls by then to allow for an "orderly cessation.
