Hortman was fatally shot two weeks earlier by a man posing as a police officer in an attack that Minnesota’s chief federal prosecutor has called an assassination.

Former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were honored at a private funeral on Saturday, weeks after she was killed in what’s been called a politically motivated assassination. Former President Biden and former Vice President Harris were among the attendees.

The public has the opportunity on Friday to bid farewell to slain Democratic Minnesota House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark and their dog, Gilbert — all of whom will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda.
