Naegleri fowleri is an amoeba that can cause a serious central nervous system infection, according to the Cleveland Clinic. The Carr family says Jaysen died on July 18 after coming in contact with Naegleria fowleri in Lake Murray.

The CDC says that since 1962, there have been 167 cases reported, and just four of those people have survived.
