A to Z Sports on MSNPromising Washington Commanders veteran unexpectedly retires during training camp and creates a new roster holeThe latest headline at Commanders Park happened today as the Washington Commanders reported for practice and received some unfortunate news. This time, it isn't about a contract extension, but instead a player stepping away from the game of football and retiring.
Herbig remained with the Steelers in 2024, but his injury in the preseason led to him being placed on IR last Aug. 20 and missing the entire season. The Commanders signed him on March 14, but he won't ever play for Washington.
Herbig signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent in 2019 out of Stanford. He played three seasons in Philadelphia before joining the New York Jets in 2022 and the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2023. A torn rotator cuff kept him out all of last season.
Former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman Nate Herbig has retired, according to the Washington Commanders. He signed a one-year deal with the team, but is choosing to hang up the cleats instead of pushing forward.
