After Hurricane Helene, Taylor Schenker found herself with about 200 family photos that didn't belong to her. Now, she's hoping to reunite them with the people they belong to.

A family in Asheville, North Caroline, who lost their home to Hurricane Helene was able to recover photographs featuring their late son, thanks to the work of a diligent police detective.

When Hurricane Helene slammed into Florida with 140-mph winds, the impacts on the ground were deadly, and that power reverberated up into Earth’s atmosphere, creating ripples seen by a NASA instrument more than 55 miles above.

Phil Miles, 76, a regular Muni golfer who before Helene played weekly, was back at the course for the first time Nov. 7. He was out of town when the storm reached WNC, and said even from afar, watching the devastation was “heartbreaking.”

The highway has been shut down since Hurricane Helene's floodwaters swept away extensive sections along the Pigeon River.
