A vortex formed over the Deer Creek Fire on Saturday in San Juan County, causing damages to a fire engine and structures in the area.

Heavy winds that swept through Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park on Sunday night started “rapid fire spread” after a relatively slow day of growth, according to fire officials.

A quick chat with our Chief Meteorologist Stephen Bowers, outlines the formation of this fire phenomenon. He said, “A fire vortex is a feature within a wildfire, usually a large and really hot wildfire, that kind of looks like a tornado made out of fire.”
